Leon Vynehall & Red Axes at Q
May 25 all-day
Leon Vynehall & Red Axes at Q @ Q Nightclub | Seattle | Washington | United States

Q Nightclub presents Studio 4/4: From House to Progressive to Tech to Deep to Disco, this night is all about 4/4 dance music as interpreted and presented by members of Lost Boys, Decibel, Flammable, Inner Flight and Trashed. Every Thursday night at Q.

LEON VYNEHALL: Leon Vynehall has already proved himself to be that rare thing – an artist with his own agenda rather than a producer aping the sound of the day. To date his off-kilter sounds have come in the form of EPs on labels like 3024, Rush Hour and Running Back, and have been carefully crafted things, layered with musicality whilst never straying too far from a infectious groove. Taking obvious foundations from house, techno, disco, funk, hip-hop and soul, Vynehall’s music incorporates many elements from his musical past too: his journey began with playing drums and the piano in bands as a teenager – which manifests itself in the raw, live sound he strives for in his productions – while much of his spare time is spent listening to anything from classical and orchestral compositions to post-punk. His work has seen him dabble in tempos, palettes and styles, but all the time managing to keep his songs coherently ‘Vynehall’.

RED AXES: Two Friends, machines, psychedelia, potions, and an unconditional passion for music, sound and motion. Re-defining the sound of a city, gluing together influences, opening new spectrums and introducing the world to a new wave of slow burning down beats and electric garage. A Deep organic build up which started in 2010, in the basements of Amsterdam and the streets of Tel Aviv. Originated in a post-punk band called “Red Cotton” that metamorphosed later into Red Axes. There are many ways of seeing things, Performing Live as a duo or with different guests on stage, or their infamous Dj sets, a trip that will take you very far and as exotic as possible.

Christian Martin at Kremwerk
May 27 all-day
Christian Martin at Kremwerk @ Kremwerk | Seattle | Washington | United States

Launched to destabilise the status quo of mainstream culture. A mission to bring light to the deepest, darkest realms of the musical spectrum. A revolution born from an uprising of creativity and strength; we will not be constrained.

We’re incredibly honored to welcome Dirtybird co-founder Christian Martin to Kremwerk along with a phenomenal arsenal of support. Learning the craft in 2002 from fellow DB co-founder and brother, Justin Martin, proved to be the initial domino that’s led to 15 years of eclectic shows & releases. The brothers linked with Claude VonStroke, J.Phlip and Worthy in 2003 to establish a worldwide brand aimed to bring the music to the top of the priority list. Branching out from an intimate BBQ party in San Francisco, Dirtybird has transformed multiple times since then, from a residency to a full blown international label recognized around the globe. A collective of artists looking to stay true to their brand and bring their sound to the masses, Christian Martin brings a rich history with electronic music to the table.

Lee Reynolds, Mikey Lion & Porkchop Marbs/DESERT HEARTS with YO YO YOGA on the Monkey Loft Rooftop
May 29 @ 12:00 pm – 8:00 pm
Lee Reynolds, Mikey Lion & Porkchop Marbs/DESERT HEARTS with YO YO YOGA on the Monkey Loft Rooftop @ Monkey Loft | Seattle | Washington | United States

For the third Memorial DAY in a row, Shameless is launching another summer rooftop season celebrating life, music and community. This year, there will be multiple stages and a whole lot of house, techno and LOVE!

ROOFTOP STAGE – DESERT HEARTS SHOWCASE featuring:
Lee Reynolds
Mikey Lion
Porkchop
Marbs

About Desert Hearts: Over the past 4 years, the Desert Hearts Family has found itself at the center of a dusty movement, fostering intimate experiences of sonic joy and unbounded love across the globe. Part boutique festival, part record label, and part globetrotting party brigade, this ragtag crew of dreamers has emerged as a vibe-focused force radiating a conscious ethos of House, Techno and Love. In November 2012, Desert Hearts began as a 200-person renegade gathering deep in the Mojave Desert, dreamt up by the DH’s founding quintet of Mikey Lion, Lee Reynolds, Porkchop, Marbs, & Kristoff McKay. The intrepid crew barely survived a set of extreme weather conditions and unfortunate circumstances, but that first party sparked a fire.

In just a few short years what began as a nomadic gathering of friends, has evolved into the darling of the West Coast house and techno scene. Though each edition of the festival may sell out, the DH Crew made the decision to keep the events intimate, ensuring that the love, radical self-expression and positive energy of that first adventure remains at its beating heart. It’s what has attracted world-class bookings like Tiefschwarz, DJ Harvey, Monkey Safari, Rodriguez Jr., DJ T, Claude VonStroke, Marc Houle, Olivier Giacomotto, Mark Henning, M.A.N.D.Y, and many more. The beating heart of Desert Hearts is its founding fathers. A suitably colorful cast of characters, who fell into each other’s lives skating and surfing around the beaches of San Diego. Led by top hat sporting label boss Mikey Lion, the core crew is rounded out by ex-pro BMX legend turned DJ, Lee Reynolds, the artistic backbone of the crew, Marbs, Mikey’s younger brother & absolute madman, Porkchop, and renegade visionary Kristoff McKay.

If the Desert Hearts festival is the epicenter of this movement and the record label its voice, then the roaming City Hearts party series has become the legs that carry this evangelistic cause around the country. A roaming urban distillation of the festival, City Hearts has been sprinkling a little bit of California magic dust across the country and beyond, winning hearts and minds and selling out shows in Los Angeles, New York, Tulum, Mexico City, Miami, San Francisco, Houston, Chicago, Toronto, Denver, and more with more massive showings on the horizon. Desert Hearts has given rise to a family of tens of thousands and it’s safe to say the Love Movement isn’t slowing down anytime soon. Everyone that attends our events is part of our family and who are what makes the tangibly delicious vibe so astronomically good. There is no Desert Hearts without the Family. HOUSE, TECHNO, & LOVE… WE ARE ALL DESERT HEARTS.

Blueyedsoul (Open to Close set!) at Rebar
Jun 2 all-day
Blueyedsoul (Open to Close set!) at Rebar @ Rebar | Seattle | Washington | United States

Hunt & Gather presents THE LAST EPIC @ THE REBAR (transitioning our monthly to Nightjar in Pioneer Square next month). Think about the last time you went out and heard something (or someone) new. When you were entranced, surprised, intrigued, delighted by what was coming out of the speakers. When you ditched the crowd at the bar and found a new one on the dancefloor. When you forgot what time it was, what year it was, when you stayed out later than you thought you would because you couldn’t bear to miss the next record, or the next few. The best DJs live and breathe music all day long, but you only get to hear them for an hour at a time. It’s time to change that. At Epic, it’s all headline. Every month, talented locals and visiting guests will take over the whole Re-Bar, for the whole night, so you can hear what they’re all about. Not just what they can find the time to play in a one-hour slot, but what they’d play for you and your friends in their living room. Not just the hits, but the inspiration behind them. Open to close sets are a true test of any DJ and a challenge that most live for. They are a chance for the DJ to immerse the dance floor in the groove, shift the focus across the full experience and tell a complete story.

An Open to Close DJ Set from Blueyedsoul: Benny Sheffield has helped shape Seattle’s nightlife scene for over a decade holding down iconic nights at The Woods, and his residencies at Studio 4/4 and the esteemed “Motown On Mondays” night at Bar Sue. Blueyedsoul is an all around DJ’s DJ, who’s sets can fit as comfortably in the deepest underground to the most popular discotheque. We welcome Benny as our final DJ at EPIC as we transition our monthly to Nightjar in Pioneer Square.

Claude VonStroke at Q
Jun 2 all-day
Claude VonStroke at Q @ Q Nightclub | Seattle | Washington | United States

Low_pass: It’s time to set a higher bar for the low end of our music. Inspired by the sounds of bass house, G-house, UK garage, and more; Low_pass is our unfiltered take on uptempo, bassline-driven dance music. Q Nightclub’s award-winning Funktion-One sound system boasts 21-inch subwoofers and once a month we’re gonna find out just how far down the rabbit hole they’ll go.

CLAUDE VONSTROKE: In this day and age of music cross-pollination, Claude VonStroke sits at the forefront of all that is good, proper, and most importantly, fun. He’s just as at home remixing Kenny Larkin or Rihanna as he is dropping multiple underground hits. DJ-wise, his relentless touring of every major city, festival, and basement after-party around the world has only enriched this unique perspective on music. Raised in Detroit and now based in Venice Beach, Barclay Crenshaw created the quirky alias “Claude VonStroke” in 2005 and went on to become one of the most well-respected label owners and DJs in dance music. His first release, ‘Deep Throat’ was a hit, putting his imprint on the decks of DJs around the globe. But the real breakthrough came with double-header ‘The Whistler/Who’s Afraid of Detroit?.’ The 12” cemented Claude’s reputation as a producer to be reckoned with, crossing borders, genres, and musical ears, and is now known as one of the classic dance releases of the decade.

Give Me Future: SIFF Documentary Film about Major Lazer’s historic event in Cuba
Jun 2 @ 9:00 pm – 11:00 pm
Give Me Future: SIFF Documentary Film about Major Lazer's historic event in Cuba @ Ark Lodge Cinemas | Seattle | Washington | United States

Not your average concert documentary, Give Me Future electrifyingly follows EDM musical trio Major Lazer as they navigate the behind-the-scenes challenges of staging a historic free concert in Havana, while also examining the recent changes in Cuban culture.

A young Cuban woman plays around on her MP3 player and laments, “I live in a city that is stuck in time, all the noises are old”: So begins Austin Peters’ Major Lazer concert doc. The trio of musicians―Diplo, Jillionaire, and Walshy Fire―pride themselves on touring nontraditional areas such as Jakarta and Islamabad with their dancers and ever-growing family of collaborators. The focus of the doc is Major Lazer’s now-legendary Havana concert. Taking place in the José Martí Anti-Imperialist Platform, a venue where various anti-American rallies had been held over the years, Major Lazer’s performance to a crowd of nearly 500,000 rightfully feels like so much more than just an EDM show. Peters beautifully weaves stories of Cuban youth and the politics of information-sharing in the 21st century around local performances and concert footage. As Major Lazer’s album titles suggest, “Peace Is the Mission” and “Music Is the Weapon,” and once the group takes the stage in front of half a million, the goal is felt―and is truly a sight that must be experienced to understand.

Wallflower: SIFF Documentary Film about the Capitol Hill Rave Massacre
Jun 6 @ 7:00 pm – 9:00 pm
Wallflower: SIFF Documentary Film about the Capitol Hill Rave Massacre @ SIFF Cinema Egyptian | Seattle | Washington | United States

The tragic Capitol Hill massacre of 2006 is the basis for this harrowing fictional drama about a man planning to commit a mass shooting who is befriended by an eccentric group of ravers and finds himself conflicted about his intentions. On the night a disturbed man from a small town plans to commit a mass shooting at a Seattle rave, he is befriended by an eccentric group of ravers who invite him into their home. As the night unfolds, he finds himself conflicted about his intentions as the lines blur between their liberated world and his repressed desires. WALLFLOWER is a clash of civilizations: the old America versus the new.

Writer/director Jagger Gravning recounts the Capitol Hill massacre of 2006 in this docudrama, based on the events of that night. Though the story of a mass shooter and his victims is, sadly, not an uncommon one, this film traces the events through the eyes of the perpetrator as he struggles with the choices he’s made and the ones he hasn’t. As he meets an eccentric group of ravers who welcome him into their home and lives, making him question what he believes he must do, the conflict within himself is evident. In the words of Gravning, this film is not meant to gain sympathy for the 2006 shooter, Kyle Huff. Rather, he uses Wallflower as a homage to empathy, reveling in the fact that if empathy is shown to those who put themselves in the position of the perpetrator, tragic events of this nature will stop becoming the norm in this culture. Gravning’s passion for the project and message is evident throughout the film, while also paying tribute to the creative, colorful, lively cultivation of the Seattle rave scene.

Director’s Statement:

When I was sixteen there was an attempted murder inside my home. It was perpetrated by a man who had been stalking my mother. He had climbed the pipes on the side of our house to get into my mom’s bedroom on the second floor. I had been out. When I got home that night the entire house was surrounded by yellow police tape and squad cars. An officer told me my mom was at the hospital. Bleeding from knife wounds, running from the house, she had survived. The man who tried to murder her collapsed on the porch with five bullets from her borrowed revolver inside his body. He lives inside a prison to this day.

After the event on which Wallflower is based occurred, my mom took in one of that shooting’s survivors, “T”, a close friend of mine since childhood. “T” had been hiding behind the couch as a killer continued his rampage inside the living room of “The Blue House.” My mom got her a job at the same place she herself worked and gave her a home. They lived together for more than half a year as “T” embarked on her psychological recovery after surviving the event which had taken one of her best friends. That friend was “J” (who also grew up in Mt. Vernon, Washington, along with “T” and myself). “J” invited me to the rave in question. He wanted us both to take ecstasy and dress up like clowns at the rave, although I declined the offer.

The characters in Wallflower are completely fictional. But Strobe Rainbow’s escape and return to the house years later was inspired by my friend Randi Pinney, a survivor I met later, who was on the porch when the killer first opened fire from the front yard, and who is now an associate producer on this film. While the film must deal with death, the context and broader theme is the pursuit of joy and happiness in spite of our struggles and even in the aftermath of tragedy. The killer’s personal arc is one of despair that led to a shocking act of evil. The film itself, however, begins with that act of violence, but never returns to it. This is because the killer’s arc is not the arc of the film. We are making a film filled with color and exuberance.

Almost every person I knew in the rave community came from a broken family (so do I) but they bonded together, a subculture that in some ways hearkened back to our shamanic roots—the use of psychoactive substances and music to achieve altered states, the ceremonial costuming, even the rave community’s most shocking characteristic to outsiders: underage kids who mingle freely with adults, could be viewed as part of the “come one, come all” spirit, in line with the ancient demarcations of initiation. This was a very dark day in Seattle’s history. But the issues we are wrestling with in the film are of universal significance — ones that will not go away simply through cultural avoidance of the subject matter, as the ongoing nature of these national tragedies have shown us.

It may be absolutely impossible to imagine at first, and it may take a very long time, but we must never give up hope that a survivor—or any one of us—can eventually overcome despair in order to return to a place where love, happiness and joy can return anew. For me, these notions of struggling for happiness in the face of mortality are not hypothetical; I had been suffering from cancer for years during the development of Wallflower, leading ultimately to a diagnosis of Stage II colon cancer in the spring of 2015. Two major surgeries and lengthy hospital stays followed. I now have no detectable cancer inside my body and am presently in perfect health. However, since I ultimately decided to skip the officially recommended adjuvant chemotherapy in order to film Wallflower, my oncologist tells me that I am left with a one in four chance of being dead within five years due to cancer recurrence. I remain resolute in my conviction to see Wallflower to completion.

Wallflower: SIFF Documentary Film about the Capitol Hill Rave Massacre
Jun 8 @ 3:30 pm – 5:30 pm

Seattle Trance Alliance presents The Sounds Of Trance: AVA Recordings Night featuring:

Andy Moor – AVA Recordings/Assured Agency: Andy Moor’s name is firmly cemented as one of the most highly respected in the electronic dance music industry, proven by a career studded with numerous accolades including a Grammy nomination, ‘Best Dance Record,’ at the International Dance Music Awards, ‘Best Trance Producer’ and ‘Best Trance Track’ at the ‘Trance Awards’, persistently high rankings on the DJ Mag Top 100 and a vast and loyal following. With a catalogue that extends far beyond productions under his own name, Andy Moor has been part of a multidude of iconic acts, such as ‘Tilt’, ‘Whiteroom’, Leama & Moor’ and remixed for a diversity of artists such as Britney Spears, Tiesto, Orbital, Brian Eno to name but a few. For the past 9 years fans have been tuning into Andy’s ‘Moor Music’ radio show and podcast, where only the best in progressive trance gets showcased under the motto “Less talk, More Music” whilst his imprint AVA Recordings is celebrating it’s 10th anniversary this year. Somna – AVA Recordings: In an ever expanding global electronic music scene with new artists appearing every day, it takes nothing short of raw talent to stand out. His singles can be found on a few of the biggest trance labels in the world including Armada Music, Future Sound Of Egypt, AVA Recordings, Black Hole Recordings, Perfecto and Go On Air Recordings.

Cut Copy at the Neptune

Cut Copy at the Neptune @ The Neptune | Seattle | Washington | United States

STG presents Cut Copy at the Neptune

It’s hard to believe that Cut/Copy once only existed as an idea in the Melbourne bedroom of frontman Dan Whitford, who was at the time running a very successful local design studio and immersing himself in club culture by night, both in front of and behind the decks. Whitford’s early blend of samples and newly learned instruments has since evolved into a full-fledged band with guitarist Tim Hoey, drummer Mitchell Scott, and bass player Ben Browning, with each member handling a multitude of instruments. Cut/Copy’s high-energy live show is matched only by the beautiful complexity of their songs. They layer large swaths of melody, sections with dissonance, nods to many genres, and package them into coherent pop songs. The result can make large groups of people gather together and explode with joy. There is a Cut/Copy song for everyone, and their songs tend to be ageless — suitable for both teenage angst and cocktail parties.

Each of their four records have garnered great critical acclaim, and Cut/Copy’s catalog has won or been nominated for such prestigious awards as the GRAMMYs and the ARIAs, in addition to underground Awards such as the Webbies or the J Awards. Cut/Copy’s diversity has also landed their songs into movies like 30 Minutes or Less and Savages, television shows such as Nip/Tuck and So You Think You Can Dance, video games including FIFA 12 and Madden, and ads for PlayStation, Blackberry, Levi’s and Orange. DJing and mixes have also been a big part of Cut/Copy’s identity. From their famed Fabric mix, Fabriclive.29, to the release of 2014 Melbourne dance compilation Oceans Apart, Cut/Copy mixes are highly anticipated, often duplicated, and profoundly inimitable. Whitford and Hoey also perform as Cut/Copy DJs, and embarked on their first DJ tour in the summer of 2015. You’ll still hear the Cut/Copy sound within the songs they include in their DJ sets, but they’re known to include the best of underground dance music and perhaps-forgotten classics.

Q Nightclub presents Studio 4/4 featuring

GREEN VELVET: Change has been a constant theme throughout the successful career of Green Velvet, but as he has crossed genres, explored themes from the comedic to the serious and changed monikers, the common thread running through the music he has made for nearly two decades is its roots in and dedication to the Chicago House sound. Adopting the persona Green Velvet (not to mention a Day-Glo shock wig) for his techno-oriented pieces and DJ appearances, he became the champion of new wave Chicago beats through the ’90s—known best for hits such as “Preacher Man,” “Flash” (a No. 1 U.S. dance hit in 1995), and 1997’s laugh-inducing “Answering Machine.” The ongoing evolution in the music, career and life of the artist born Curtis Alan Jones in Chicago has been and will continue to be fascinating to watch and experience for his many followers.

If you’re searching for sound as pure voltage, the GLK is the generator.

MAD ZACH: Mad Zach combines sonic influences from hip-hop, glitch, dnb, and dub and trap, yet still remains unique in his own right. Mad Zach’s live sets fuse the elements of controllerism, finger drumming, and DJing into one.

DJ Shadow: The Mountain Will Fall 2017 Tour

Josh “DJ Shadow” Davis had already been experimenting with making beats and breaks on a four-track recorder while he was in high school in the Nor-Cal college town of Davis, but it was during university that he co-founded his own Solesides label as an outlet for his original tracks. Hooking up with Davis’ few b-boys (including eventual Solesides artists Blackalicious and Lyrics Born) through the college radio station, Shadow began releasing the Hip-Hop Reconstruction mix tapes in 1991, eventually catching the attention of The Source magazine and Dave Funkenklein. Shadow was featured in the magazine’s “Unsigned Hype” column in 1991, and Klein signed him to a production deal with Hollywood BASIC records. Concurrently, Shadow provided beats and scratches for Bay Area rapper Paris and was featured on his second album. In 1993, Shadow pressed his 17-minute beat-head symphony “Entropy.” His tracks spread widely through the DJ-strong hip-hop underground, eventually reaching James Lavelle of Mo’ Wax.

The details about VIP and the new Emerald pass are to be announced, but we expect them to come with better access privileges. We will udate our site once information is released.
